Hey

I started my firsy cycle of HST about three weeks ago. After finishing 1 week of 10's, i got the flu and was unable to train on monday. Should i continue on wednesday and forget the missed workout. Should i take the week off and start week 2 of 10's next week. Do i have to start the cycle over again? Also, i feel that i may have lost some strength from being ill, so im not sure what i should do. Thanks for your help in advance!

If you miss a workout here or there it is not a big deal. It only becomes an issue after you miss a week or so worth of workouts.

Yeah, just skip that day, keep to the program.

And no whining, you haven't lost strength, eat more. Grunt through it! You can do it! It's a mental battle as well as physical!

Don't worry too much about it. Like baby a said, it only really becomes an issue if you miss a whole week. I get sick frequently when I'm working out a lot, but it's usually just little colds that I can largely ignore... but what I do, to make myself feel better about having missed time, is typically I will repeat the last workout, then keep going from there. You don't have to though, you can just pick up where you left off.

I definitely second the guys :D

One little bit of advice, something I read before in a health publication I get weekly. I have tried it and it works provided you tune in early enough.

When feeling flu coming on, take extra vitamin C, I am talking about up to 6000 mg for the day, 1000 mg every 2 hours or so until the feeling subsides, vitamin C is not toxic and when you top dose, you will feel slightly bloated, that is about it, so by next time you know what the top dose is!

Now, I have tried this and it works, often one feels a throat irritation or the sinus cavity feeling rather inflamed, that is the time to act! I got flu once thoughout the past year and it was because I did not act timeously.

Usually flu can be dangerous when it is heavy as it puts extra strain on the heart, one therfore should stay away form strenuous exercise, but that is flu not a head cold or a cold

If you have only missed one or two workouts, it really depends where you stopped in a mini-cycle, I can agree with the slight loss of strength, if just after two workouts or so into a minicycle (eg: second workout of 10's), re-start the minicycle, else just take off where you left.

Cheers

From what I have read, mostly on pubmed and in nutritional research that I did at school, there has never been any direct correlation between increased vitamin C intake and increased immune activity. Definitely NOT saying that it doesn't work, but just that most research appears to point in the direction of it being overhyped as a immune booster. But we all know that the mind is powerful, and the placebo effect can do amazing things. Also, vitamin C IS toxic, along with every other vitamin, mineral, water, air, etc. In fact everything you could possibly consume is toxic, it is just that most substances will not produce toxic effects until concentration in the body reach levels far greater than what one could consume under normal circumstances. You may not have noticed any ill effects, but there can be some nasty side effects from too much vit C in the diet, or through supplementation, including death.

as fausto said if its flu dont train, take a week of and start back at the beggining of the tens :D

baby a

Not that I am being funny, but do you have any articles on toxicity of vitamin C?

Specifically highest dosage, kind of like MIC's?

Just for interest sake. From what i have read, not experienced, once you get to the top dosage and I believe that to vary with individuals, you will get gas or diarrhoea or both. So you can easily discern the dangers.

Here's something I found:

Toxicity data
ORL-RAT LD50 11900 mg kg-1 (oral lethal dose 50 % kill)
ORL-MUS LD50 3367 mg kg-1
IVN-MUS LD50 518 mg kg-1

If that is the lethal dose for rats at 50%, that is almost 12g, surely 6 g will be pretty safe dude.

It's been years since I took vitamin C as a supplement, and what I learned is that it doesn't help with flu or colds, as I never got/get those anyway.

Here's what google told me:
Vitamin C 60 mg/day po is fully protective. Most nutritionists believe that huge doses of vitamin C (about 10 g/day) do not decrease the incidence or severity of the common cold (see Respiratory Viral Diseases in Ch. 162) or influence the progress of malignant disease or atherosclerosis. These megadoses acidify the urine; they may cause diarrhea from osmotic effects, predispose to urinary calculi from oxalate, and promote iron overload.

Fausto,

I wish this topic had come up last week, bro!! :) I just tossed an entire research paper I wrote for a toxicology lecture. But, basically the majority of most peer reviewed experimental studies have concluded that no measurable immune response was noticed with increased vit C intake. While effects such as diarrhea might be noticed after increased intake, this could be the only noticable effect, while other things could be going on underneath the surface. I will look around and see if I can dig anything up for you, buddy!! It is worth mention that I did find one review showing that temporary increases in zinc intake did show some beneficial immune response. Just how much though is what is still in question, however....

Immune system

Zinc supplementation improves immune function in those who are deficient. It increases the activity of the thymus gland, improves antibody responses and enhances the functioning of white blood cells. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and possibly viruses. Zinc supplements have also been shown to boost levels of interferon, a protein which is formed when cells are exposed to viruses and which helps to fight infection. 14

Researchers at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, tested the effects of one year of supplementation with zinc and other micronutrients on cellular immunity in elderly people. The patients, aged 60-89, were either given a placebo, 15 mg of zinc, or 100 mg of zinc daily for 12 months. The results showed improvements in some aspects of immunity. 15

In another double-blind, randomized, controlled trial published in 1998, researchers tested the effects of vitamin A and zinc (25 mg as zinc sulfate) supplements in 136 residents of a public home for older people in Rome. The results showed that zinc supplementation improved cell-mediated immune response.16

Many studies show beneficial effects of zinc in the treatment of diarrhea, a major cause of death in children in developing countries. Researchers involved in a double-blind trial carried out in India involving almost 600 children aged 6-35 months found that zinc supplements reduced diarrhea outbreaks. 17

Oral supplementation with zinc and zinc sulfate gel may shorten healing time in cases of herpes virus infection.

Ah, thanks baby a, the joys of this forum...so darn scientific, it beutifies the way we train our muscles and....well it is good fro the brain too I see

Cool, man...I believe you and yes, if you find the paper you post it or pm me ;)

Another thing, the reason why I somewhat believe in this is that I have tried it and it works, obviously I am not as good as new, but just yesterday while I was writting the post I was actually feeling a cold coming on...you kind of feel a roughness in your throat and sinuses, so I took about 6 g of the good ol' vit C and today I just have a slight blocked nose.

I do have a bit of sinusitis albeit not too bad so the blocked nose often happens anyway!

As for the zinc I had read it myself and yep it is one of the effects of it, the side effect although and it is not mentioned that much is almost like viagra though!

I once took ZMA and yep it feels great, now however I take about 2 g flax + 1 g Vit C + B complex, and good ol' otameal porridge after a strong cup of instant coffee, that is me!
