Protein Shake Storage

I've read somewhere in the past that you shouldn't store a pre-mixed protein drink, even in the refrigerator, for much more than an hour. I think I've seen two different reasonings for this: 1) the high protein content provides a good environment for bacteria to grow 2) the protein becomes denatured.
Obviously, I wouldn't expect that you would keep it for much more than a couple of hours, but what would be an acceptable and safe period of time to store it in the fridge? Does the carbhydrate content of the mixture (e.g., an MRP vs a mixture of primarily just protein) make a difference to the duration that the mixture can be stored?
