Hypertrophy while hypocaloric

Time & time again, I read of people on various boards who claim to have experienced hypertrophy (sometimes w/ some fat loss) while HYPOcaloric.

For instance..."after 2 weeks, my measurements on several parts went up 1/4 inch, lost 1% bodyfat but only lost .5 lb."

Putting aside glycogen & water retention, and normal weight & measurement fluctuations.... is it possible to hypertrophy while hypocaloric?

Is this a function of effective nutrient partitioning - a greater percentage of available calories are going to muscle growth, and the fat cells are 'starved' - through resistance training and some supplement regimen?

Growing larger while on a hyocaloric diet is possible. But it depends on a few factors:

1) How big are you already? The greater the degree of hypertrophy you already have the lessor the chance of it happening.

2) How much were calories below maintenance? The great the caloric deficit, the lessor the chance of it happening.

3) Drugs such as steroids, ephedrine, caffeine, thyroid, GH, all allow hypertrophy to happen while losing bodyfat.

4) Protein intake of course is critical

5) The right training methods must be employed.

During my 2nd HST cycle (cutting cycle), I've experienced a little gain, but only in my legs (1cm) and in my chest (0.5cm). Other than that, at the end of the cycle, my stats were unchanged (more or less).
