Hi all - I'm not new to training, been doing 18 months seriously (and played around a lot in the gym before that), but new to HST - and I have a question about volume.

Looking at the article For Dummies, it looks like volume increases as the weeks go by. As I move into sets of 5s, it's considered pretty normal to do 3 sets per exercise, which mean 3 times the recovery, and bearing in mind that 5s take longer to rrecover from, and THEN when you include warm ups too then that's a lot of time and it's best not to spend over an hour douing weights... am I missing something? I feel I must be.

Cheers guys!

3 sets doesnt mean 3 times the recovery.

squats
bench
chin ups (close grip underarm)
deadlifts
military press
bent over row

all times 3.

ill agree with style that 3x5 does not also mean 3x the recov. but....

i need a little more time to recov. between sets of some of the big moves like squat and dl but not as much for the presses, dips or chins.
for 10s and 15s my rest is 90-120secs for all exer. but for 5s i take at least 2-3min on squat and dl and 2min on everything else. those 2 exer. at and close to 5rep max are just too cardiovascular for me to do well unless i take a longer rest.

Yeh definitely. Between sets with heavy weights, yeh you want to take a minute or two. I was meaning between workouts ( as long as you dont go to failure anyway)

Ok I see my answer didnt cover the orginal question

.

As long as you keep your workouts efficient, keeping to the compound exercises, then you can complete a 3x5 set workout in under an hour including warm ups. Remember since we're usually dealing with sub max weights and not going to failure (at least not on the first and second sets) you can take shorter rest peroids between sets

You can split the workout into two, one in the morning, and one later on after supper.

Thats what I've started doing for my 10s.

if you need longer inbetween sets take it it doesnt matter ..what is important is that you do all sets correctly..take pre and post nutrition and going over the hour should be ok..but if you are not sure take a sports drink to the gym and sip it while you workout
