I actually looked into buying one of these, but you have to use a false grip for it to work.   Despite the fact that a false grip would be safe using this kind of machine, I need to have my thumb wrapped around the bar to be comfortable.

This thing has actually been around for awhile. I first saw it about three years ago when Lee Priest was helping to sponsor it. Maybe they have improved it.

There's a bug with that site: kept locking up my 'pooter and had to 3 finger it away. Anyway, I saw the unit: 200 lb. stack only. Useless for the big stuff. Neat idea though. You'd think someone could do it with a foot pedal, so you could use a regular grip.

This is what customer service has to say about the grip issue:

This is in response to your recent inquiry to ProSpot Fitness. A false grip (where the thumb is placed under the barbell, next to the forefinger) is the recommended grip when using a ProSpot barbell. This is to ensure that the thumbs do not maintain contact with the barbell after your hands are opened to lock the barbell in place. However, once a person becomes accoustomed to using the auto-locking barbell system, they can certainly use a normal grip if they desire. Just be sure the remove your thumbs from the touch sensor when locking the barbell.

Please feel free to call or e-mail us with any other questions. In addition, your local fitness retailer who sells ProSpot Fitness equipment would be happy to demonstrate and explain the various features and options.

Interesting response Steve.

The P600 system looks like a great system. Just what I could do with if I set up a home gym. A lot to invest though.

At 85"H x 57"D x 63"W it's a pretty large bit of kit.

Anyone got one of these? Pros and cons?

Looks like you can position spot blocks to limit range for extra piece of mind.

That's what I did a few years back.

I used an electric hoist with a foot pedal, had to do a little fabricating to make it work but it worked fine until the motor burnt up and I said screw it. I used it for eccentrics but couldn't retro the sytem for all lifts. Plus I really had to turn up the Zep to overcome the motor noise.

I've been thinking lately to try it again with a heavier duty motor but haven't gotten to it (the story of my life

Dan, I can just picture you desperately trying to work out how to press that there little ol' footswitch when you're stuck in the hole during a particularly heavy squat!

Over at Johnstonefitness.com....(its a website about a guy who started training seriously a couple of years ago) he has a cool home gym called the Titan.

If I was going to start my own home gym I would look into some of these...however I dont know much they cost?

Personally, I think the Titan incorporate way too much extra crap that you could get by without.

Exactly.

I think a full range of dumbells...a adjustable bench... Squat Rack with pullup bar and dip station.....a couple of tubes of steroids....gatorade....and you are good to go.

Well maybe not the gatorade but you get my point!

Yeah the Titan has way to much crap on it that I would never use.

Personally I'm very happy with my power rack with pull-up bar, dip handles, FID bench and olympic weight set. I would like to get some dumbbells at some point but I don't absolutely need them. I just need to decide which route I want to go, seperates or adjustables and start saving some money.

jThe ProSpot, now that I've seen it, is awesome. But why did Lee Priest have a spotter? Doesn't he trust it?

The Titan is a big dog all right. But 90 exersizes...heheh, I can do 62 on my body solid, but how many do I do? Seven. And two of those are my modifications to the machine! I'm gonna sell it and get a power rack like Bull, with a cable row and later add the arms kit for crossovers, because I love doing them. I look forward to becoming a total freeweight freak!
I taught a guy with just spin-on dumbells and a barbell how to work out his whole body. He didn't believe it could be done; he thought he had to have a gym.

I told him to spend his money on steak for now.
