Adding new exercises to an HST program

If I understand correctly, the CNS takes a while to learn a new exercise even if it is roughly the same movement. And there might be some relatively fast strength improvement while learning the new movement that is not due to hypertrophy.

Should I allow myself some time (a week or two) to learn the exercise using a fixed rep range before adding it to an new HST cycle? This way I have a more accurate rep max.

I wouldn't. I would take my best shot at my rm and if I find I underestimated it due to the reason you cite, I would just adjust for it during my cycle. Why waste a couple of weeks when you could be HSTing? ;) Assuming, of course, that it is not a technically difficult new lift such as an olympic snatch.

what O&G said, personally I keep the 15's plain jane with compound motions and don't start adding till mid 10's.
