    4th Cycle - Advice

Is HST your first experience with weight training, or have you lifted before? Also, how many sets are you doing, what is your diet like, and why only 6 weeks of training?

question regarding the HST training prog

Hey Professor, There is a TON of information available on this sight. You should start by reading all of the FAQ section. It will answer most of your questions. And take your time, read the studies, etc. -- it will all make sense.

    1 set per body part

If that's the case, and you can still grow from just one set, then that's fine. For many of us who have been doing this for a long time, more sets are required. Take a look at Bryan's routine, for example. He works out (as I recall) twice on workout days AND does more than one set.

    1 set per body part

Ok, so, upon closer inspection, only one of the studies measured increases in size -- this one was with untrained subjects. The others measured strength and IGF. The last study mentioned size in its conclusion, but only spoke specifically about strength -- no mention of how size was measured...

    1 set per body part

Could you post a link to any of those studies? I'd love to take a closer look at what they did, but I can't find any of them.

    1 set per body part

What I meant was, you can gain tremendous amounts of strength without actually gaining any mass, so measuring the success of any program based on how much strength you gained is pointless.  It doesn't prove anything.  Consequently, any of those studies that use strength as a measure, are...

    1 set per body part

Measuring how effective a routine is for inducing hypertrophy by measuring strength is the traditional weakness in these studies. Strength gains don't necessarily have anything to do with an increase in muscle size. The last sentence makes a conclusion about muscle size -- how was this...

    1 set per body part

Any of those studies performed on previously trained athletes? Usually they use untrained people. Most of us know (from experience) that almost anything will work when you are completely unaccustomed to weight training.

ACSM Now Endorses Simple Training Programs for Ex

Except that they ignore the importance of load, judging instead by relative "intensity"; ignore RBE; don't seem to understand conditioning of the tissue; and don't understand that more conditioned tissue may require additional volume. So, yeah, other than that it sounds exactly like HST.

    1 set per body part

If you are new to weight training one set will probably be fine. If you've been training for some time, it may not be enough. Don't worry about the soreness, though -- you can still train even if you are still sore from the last workout.

    volume confusion

That volume is a good place to start. Run through a couple of cycles and if it needs tweaking, there are lots of things you can do.

    volume confusion

Also, a lot of us do try to keep volume pretty consistent -- especially from the 10s to the 5s (ie. two sets of 10, three or four sets of 5s).   If you are new to weight training, three sets of 10s is probably more than you need.

    Perfect HST routine

How many sets are you doing? I'm amazed that after 11 years you are able to grow with so few exercises. I recently had to increase my volume (again) to break a year-long plateau.

    volume confusion

Everything is relative to your level of conditioning, as well. There is no one answer. You have to lift a heavy-enough load, for a long-enough time. Oh yeah, and it has to be frequently-enough, too. :)

    Hamstrings

I'm just the opposite. I never feel like I can lift enough weight with leg curls, but SLDLs KILL me. Never been so sore in my life as I was the day after doing my first set of deads. Of course, there are additional benefits to doing deads (traps, biceps), but even if we're just talking...

    HST during Steroid Cycle

Under most circumstances an SD would be the best way to start HST. You could switch to it now if you want, however, if you do, don't start with a weight that is lower than what you have been using. You may be able to get away with not increasing the load for a while, but if you go back down to a...
