    Customizing HST

Sure, you can do a burn set on the off days with a little cardio. This is a nice way to time your daily carb intake as well. Of course, your daily caloric intake will have to rise to adjust toward 6x-a-week training. Important to keep that in mind. cheers, Jules

    gaining 100 lbs

Nah, from pictures I've seen of him for Batman Begins, he's not 100lbs heavier from an average person. Again, he trained himself severely, severely thin for Machinist. Man was a walking rib cage. From that kind of starvation state, guy would regain weight very quickly. cheers, Jules

    Customizing HST

Actually, yeah, you're encouraged to do a burn set for each compound movement during 5s and post-5s. Especially for the metabolically disadvantaged guy, such as yourself, who needs the extra pick-me-up. Of course, if you're already doing a pulsing movement for that bodypart, it's not necessary...

    Customizing HST

BTW guys, I'm looking to do an "expansion" (gotta put the Tao of Vince somewhere ;) ) sometime by the beginning of July. Feel free to post your topic/question wish list here. Whatever you'd like to see (or see clarified), so I can start researching. :) cheers, Jules

    Vince Gironda's oldschool info

Sissy squats are one option. It's a little cumbersome (and it's not recommended if you have knee issues), but it hurts the quads better than even squats. Can anybody recommend a Gironda book? I thought about purchasing the Elitefitness. cheers, Jules

    Training 6x a week

One of the great things about HST is how it allows you to do things that aren't realistic with other systems. It's rather fun. ;) Frequency is a really nice way to sneak up the volume without causing excessive fatigue. And it (probably) keeps protein synthesis levels higher than 3 or 4x-a-week...

    Vince Gironda's oldschool info

Periodically, somebody will bring up one of Gironda's routines that resembles the classic HST template. Somebody could do a search here and find that example discussed pro and con. I'd say, though, that layoffs has been a standard part of periodization thinking since the 80s, and most...

"Lactic acid does not stimulate growth"...?

Son of Novak, kneeeeeeellll before The Bryan!! we got any General Zod fans here? just checking . . . . cheers, Jules p.s. Max-OT is a pretty good program for hypertrophy. Some relatively minor changes to it could significantly improve one's results with it.

    Study: 1 set vs 3

Poliquin's GVT program was based on Gironda's X by X schemes (usually 6x6, 8x8 and 10x10.) "Beginners" would start out on 6x6, which involved using a very light weight (somewhere around the 50% of 1RM range) and very short periods (10-30 seconds.) It's actually not *that* tough. It's...

Supplement choice are is it a choice

Yeah, that's not a good idea. It's possible that the cardio you're doing is causing a catabolic reaction (since you're also depleting your glycogen stores at an alarming rate. Conservatively speaking, an hour of power walking would burn 400-600 calories, and much of that would be in carbs. Erm...

    Eat less on off days?

You should eat more on your workout day than off day. With one important exception. If you work out at night, your workout day actually extends through the next noon/afternoon, and your off day extends through just before your pre-WO nutrition for your workout. cheers, Jules

    Cardio during a bulking cycle?

Basically, what dkm and domineaux said. I personally feel 1 hour is a bit long if you're just looking to bulk, but the key really is the post-WO nutrition and keeping your caloric intake in surplus. It's a really good way to carb load and keep glycogen storage high. cheers, Jules

Why did I grow from HIT?

FWIW, I still consider Mentzer the biggest influence on training education. The training examples doesn't look like that, but his book was the first one that got me into seeing big picture and deconstructing workout routines. That is the real beginning of mastery, when you go from merely...

    LyleMcD on loaded stretching

I guess I find the ongoing controversy with loaded stretches so bewildering given the popularity of flexibility training and plyometrics. Lyle is correct, in the sense, that if you were to hold muscle fibers in a passive stretch, the response won't be all that significant without a...

Why did I grow from HIT?

Ah, let me explain. It requires some context of the standard HD2 routine . . . Usually, Mentzer used a 3-way split spread over 7-14 days. The layout was chest/back, legs, and arms, each day was separated by 2-4 days or so. I *think* the arms day included dips but I don't remember. This meant...

    HST tweeking thread

Dood: The Customization thread has been moved/copied to the General Training section. That will be its new home. (Though it would be funny if we deleted it in the HST section and see the board reaction. ) The Word file is over there. That's the free version. If you pay me $59.99 (preferably in...

    HST tweeking thread

Actually dkm was gracious enough to convert the silly thing into a proper PDF.  It's got the table of contents on the left side, so navigation is really easy.  And the tables actually look right in this format.  *sniff*  It's beautiful.   I love you Dan.  If I ever realize my dream of becoming...
