    Quality of Protein

Some people claim that protein is protein, and that only the quantity matters. Some say that bioavailability rating is more indicative of it. So, what makes one brand of protein better than other? Is it the amount of hydrolysate v. isolate? Or is it indeed just the quantity? Presence of...

    insulin resistance: confusion

Basically Lyle is saying this: when a person becomes obese, his body makes an ill-fated attempt to not become any more fat by developing insulin resistance. This is why insulin resistance and obesity tend to go together.

    Why Eat Meat?

I think that, while it is difficult to obtain certain nutrients without eating meat, one does not need to consume that much of it. Eating enough meat in order to live healthy is one thing, but to immerse onself in gluttony is another. It results in needless killing of animals, unnecessary...

    Insulin Spiking

I don't know about other times, but ONE time that you want to spike it is post-exercise. Note that the insulin spike at this time will not make you fat -- all nutrients will be shuttled into muscles and other organs that need'em.

    FAQ re: post-WO

I won't cite references, cuz certain forum members don't like it, but let me comment about carbs. I have been doin my readings a bit, and it seems that, post-workout, one needs to up the high GI carb intake ALONG with protein. The reason is that you want a biggest anabolic spike you want...

    L-Carnitine?

I think acety-l-carnitine administration is good for the reasons which I explained in the preceding posts. ======================================== As for the impact of L-carnitine administrations on exercise performance or fat loss, I must agree with Aaron. The research studies have NOT shown...

    CLA dosage

taj -- I KNOW I had seen the particular study which showed increased muscle insulin resistance, but I cannot find it. Unfortunately for me, as it pertains to this thread, only real evidence matters. That means, at present, my supporting evidence consists only of the cited references I cited...

    CLA dosage

Another impact of CLA that has not been mentioned is liver steosis. Basically, livers get HUGE on rats which are fed a great deal of CLA. BTW, google search is useless on CLA. There are too many sites that promote CLA for marketing purposes.

    CLA dosage

Thanks Blade. Unfortunately, I am having difficulty locating ONE reference that did measure increased muscle insulin resistance with CLA administration. Here are a few titles of pubmed abstrats that report CLA is not that great ... These studies, unfortunately, have been done on obese folks...

    CLA dosage

Blade certainly knows much about supplements. I think though, his conclusions on CLA is somewhat outdated. There have been recent pubmed research abstracts that have revealed more about CLA's effects on muscle. Perhaps further research will reveal that Bryan was right after all. (I think...

    L-Carnitine?

Okay, I agree that there is no vast research backing, but I think there is still significant amount of research on this, most of them pretty recent. It costs about 100 g / $15 u.s. dollars ... don't know if that is expensive or not.

    L-Carnitine?

Aaron: You are right -- sorry about that. I thought that the two were equivalent ... From what I understand, l-carnitine serves as a reservoir of "holding molecules" for acetate ions during glycogen metabolism. When you burn glycogen, you get acetate ions as part of citric acid...

    L-Carnitine?

JimmyV -- I don't know much about dosages. I have read about people taking 1-2 g pre- (1 hr prior) and post-workouts. Some say take 1.5 g per day. I shoot for 1-2 g / day. But this is really unreliable information, based on anecdotes and no real pubmed research. I do try to avoid taking...
